Annually, around 1,200 humpback whales are estimated to arrive between June - July in the Pacific Ocean around Isla Gorgona. This is one of the main reasons why tourists visit the Gorgona National Natural Park; it's a spectacular event to behold.

Gorgona National Natural Park is an island paradise, with nature trails, thriving flora and fauna, beautiful beaches, Gorgona National Natural Park eco-hotels, interesting archaeological sites, ancient ruins and many opportunities for scuba diving and snorkelling. The island was inhabited by a pre-Columbian culture around 1300. In 1525 it was visited by Diego de Almagro, and two years later by Francisco Pizarro, who gave it the name of glaucoma, inspired by Medusa (one of the three Gorgons). After other visits by bounty-hunter Bartholomew Sharp in 1679 and the English pirate Roger Woods in 1709, the island was given to Sgt Major Federico D´Cross, a German officer whose family subsequently sold part of it to Don Ramon Payan, born in Popayán who introduced coconut and fruit crops to the island.

In 1958, the state applied to the family D'Cross and Payan an insular law which stipulated that the islands belonged to the state, and because of that Gorgona became a prison. The old prison tells the tales of many men, since it housed over 2,500 prisoners throughout its history. There are several stories about prisoners who escaped!
